I don’t have a boyfriend
[Lyric & Music – Micke Wennborn]
Her eyes
Was his favorite color
Her style
Nothing like the others
The problem was she kept him secret
Best kept secret
Kept them secret
She was still in her prime
And couldn’t be tied
To just one guy
It’s not that she lied
But when other men would ask
She would always reply
“Oh No I don’t have a boyfriend – I’m single”
When he was clearly in love
But she’d rather mingle
With strangers
Saying “I don’t have a boyfriend – I’m single”
And then it all hit at once
But he’s still in love
Can you hear my heart beating?
He tried
But she kept turning him down
It hurts
Because he’s still in love
With her
Is it better this way?
It cuts like a knife
And it breaks he’s heart
It’s just not enough
And it breaks he’s heart
It breaks is heart
She was still in her prime
And couldn’t be tied
To just one guy
It’s not that she lied
But when other men would ask
She would always reply
“Oh No I don’t have a boyfriend – I’m single”
When he was clearly in love
But she’d rather mingle
With strangers
Saying “I don’t have a boyfriend – I’m single”
And then it all hit at once
But he’s still in love
With her
With her

About The Song
I Don’t Have A Boyfriend is a song about the painful difference between being present in someone’s life and being acknowledged as part of it.
Unlike many relationship songs, the conflict here is remarkably simple. The narrator is not questioning whether feelings existed. He is questioning why those feelings seemed to disappear whenever the relationship was presented to the outside world.
At the centre of the song is a single sentence:
“I don’t have a boyfriend. I’m single.”
The power of that statement comes not from the words themselves, but from the context in which they are spoken. To everyone else, it may sound harmless. To the person standing beside her, it feels like being erased in real time.
The song explores the loneliness that can exist inside a relationship when one person is treated as a private reality but a public inconvenience. The narrator is not competing with another man. He is competing with the idea of remaining available, unattached and unrestricted.
What makes the story particularly painful is that the feelings appear genuine. The problem is not the absence of affection. The problem is the absence of recognition.
At its heart, I Don’t Have A Boyfriend is a song about what happens when someone you love refuses to include you in the story they tell the world about themselves. Especially for other men than her boyfriend.
“I don’t have a boyfriend. I’m single.”
Laulu kohta
Laulu keskmes on üksainus lause:
“I don’t have a boyfriend. I’m single.”
Kõrvalseisjale võib see tunduda tähtsusetu märkusena.
Probleem on tunnustuse puudumises.
Eriti teiste meeste ees…
